3. Love Actually (may be set around Christmas time but still great! also has a GREAT cast)
4. A Walk to Remember (sad but still sweet, very sappy)
5. Bridget Jones Diary (amazingly funny and such fun to watch to joke about love)

ReplyDeleteMy top 5 would be Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Map of the Human Heart, A Matter of Life and Death, Notting Hill, and Roman Holiday. I also like the Princess Bride and Moulin Rouge on your list -- for extra bonus points viewers can sing along with "Come What May" at the end!
ReplyDeleteI sing along with the entire film! But I HATE chick flicks because they are so sappy and lovey dovey. Moulin Rouge is just that...but in such a beautiful comedic way and the ending left me in tears (which NEVER happens.) I will also have to look into your list and watch them. Sound very interesting
ReplyDeleteBeing totally weird I run the other way. I can't stand sappy chick flicks, give me a John Waters film anytime. The sight of Kathleen Turner bludgeoning someone to death with a leg of lamb to the backdrop of Annie is the ultimate foil to a Hollywood romance. If you like your love story served up shaken and emotionally bruised, I suggest Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe. It's a romance that's gone KABOOM! There are some great lines like when George tells Martha not to go around braying at everyone. Don't attempt a drinking game of the film, Martha always wins.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, the phrase "chick flick" dates back only to the early 1990's -- not that Hollywood didn't, for a long time, market some of its wares that way. I love the idea of John Waters -- great choice! Or one could do a series of those "screwball comedies such as "Bringing Up Baby," "Some Like it Hot," or "It Happened One Night." Come to think of it, it might not necessarily be the best thing to watch "romantic" movies on Valentine's day; why not just watch an old favorite, one where everyone knows all the lines?
